The next day we caught the train to Dent and walked back to the bunkhouse, via beautiful Dentdale and Whernside; the wind had dropped and the views were far and wide. On our last day based here, we followed a circular route from Horton-in-Ribblesdale up towards the sharp end of Penyghent, with a sub group pealing off before the summit to return along the river (via a sunny pub stop!)
Not all of us continued on for the trek part of the trip, but for those who did, it was brilliant. We drove to Conistone bunkhouse - an old methodist chapel (hence no booze!) eating at the local pub by Kilnsey Crag that evening. Next day, amidst a fierce thunderstorm, most of us walked back towards Grassington and then over the Dales Way to Kettlewell - Sue decided to explore the Conistone Gorge to reduce her mileage slightly, and she ended up in Kettlewell with time to wander along to the stepping stones over the river before the heavens opened again! The independent hostel here was spacious and friendly. The second trek day saw us following a beautiful path up and over to Arncliffe and on to Malham, stopping for a sunny lunch at the tarn before continuing on to the famous Cove with its limestone pavement. Malham hostel no longer offers meals and so we were forced to eat at another pub! Our final trek took us back to the start at Conistone via Janet's Foss and some undulating hills. Another logistical nightmare for the organiser, so thank you to Jacqui for getting this planned and completed! (report by Sue)
