On arrival we travelled to Tintagel for a delicious pub meal with a pretty drive to get there. Our first walk involved a car shuffle so we could walk point to point from Port Isaac to Tintagel, and we enjoyed blustery fresh winds as we followed the South West Coast Path along facing west. It was a beautiful 10 mile walk, with early spring flowers, plenty of birdsong and sunny intervals, with a few short sharp showers – mostly when we sat down for coffee or lunch! The wind had really got up towards the final approach to Tintagel, which was exhilarating. The shorter alternative was a pretty 8 mile circular to visit a local church via fields and lanes.
The proposed route the next day was to have been a second point to point heading from Millock to Boscastle along the SWCP, but tired legs and the fairly brutal ascents and descents of the previous day meant that some of us opted instead to follow a 13 mile circular route from the cottages down to Boscastle and along to Tintagel, returning along St Nectan’s Glen, a stunningly beautiful gorge leading up onto the fields above the coast and directly back to the cottages. The shorter walk provided the same outbound walk into Boscastle to start with followed by a gentler return. Two intrepid members completed the original Millock to Boscastle and agreed that it was quite tough on the legs!
Our final day dawned a little bit misty, and we headed to Bodmin Moor to walk over Rough Tor to Brown Willy and return before the long drive home; this was totally different terrain, quite soft underfoot with the rocky outcrops providing shelter from the fierce winds but a thoroughly enjoyable walk.
We were very well fed on this trip, which was mainly vegetarian food with some delicious breakfasts, some of which have been repeated on other trips – thanks to Amber for organising and planning this most enjoyable short break.
