New Members: First Trip Away
We are always very pleased to welcome prospective new members to Highdown. If you’re considering joining us on a trip, we require that you come along on a full day walk first. This means that you get a good idea of the kinds of terrain, duration and ascents we are used to. All of our day walks have a blurb in the calendar with details of the planned walk, and weekend trips can be more strenuous in rougher terrain than that typically found in Sussex!
The only exception to this is where the prospective new member is a well-known friend of an existing club member, and that member attends the trip with the prospective member. The existing club member will have assessed the prospective new member’s walking ability for the event being undertaken. Should the existing club member have to withdraw from the trip then so must the prospective club member.
Transport and Costs
Transport will be co-ordinated by the trip organiser using private cars, unless otherwise stated in the programme details. Our trips take us all over the country and we are keen that our club keeps its environmental impact to a minimum. We encourage car sharing and promote the country code. We only leave footprints and only take photos and great memories. The costs shown are approximate and generally include transport and accommodation/campsite fees. Some trips are fully self-catering, some may include breakfasts only, others will also include an evening meal. A very few also include your sandwiches. Read the trip notes carefully and you won't go wrong!
Further Details
Accommodation can vary from trip to trip. Some trips involve Youth Hostels. You do not need to take any bedding on these trips. Bunkhouses vary, some have mattresses and pillows, some don't. Whatever the case, you will need a sleeping bag and pillow case, possibly a pillow as well. Camping trips require a tent and stove as well as all your bedding etc. The joining instructions will tell you what to bring.
If you are interested in a trip, early booking is recommended as places are often limited. Having booked a place and paid your (non-refundable) deposit, preferably by cheque or bank transfer, to the trip organiser, you should receive joining instructions containing final details of all the arrangements about 10 - 15 days before the trip. If you still have any queries about the trip, don't hesitate to contact the trip organiser who will be only too pleased to answer them for you.

Foreign trip – MadeiraWednesday 13th - Wednesday 20th March 2024Our foreign trip for 2024 takes us to the beautiful island of Madeira. Surging from the Atlantic Ocean, Madeira offers a temperate sub-tropical paradise perfect for year-round walking. One of Madeira's many charms is its infinite variety; each day's walking and every levada - the island's unique network of water channels - is different. Landscapes vary from cultivated vine terraces and verdant slopes dotted with white hamlets to coastal cliffs with balcony views over the azure seas. Some walks may require “a head for heights” as levada can be deep and walks along the edges occur. We will purchase this self-guided walking holiday from Headwater Travel (The Company Exodus use for these holidays). A representative from Headwater is located on the Island should we need help. The Itinerary and details of the holiday can be found at Itinerary for Madeira. We will take the half board option as the nearest village is 10Km away and we are staying in a remote village. You will need to ensure that you have holiday insurance in place at the time of booking. If you are over the age of 80 you cannot drive in Madeira. COSTS Holiday: £979pp + £244pp (half board supplement). This is based on 2 people sharing a twin room. (Single room supplement is £304pp). Flights: Booked separately from EasyJet. Please check EasyJet Web site for prices. In addition, you will need to budget for insurance, fuel, packed lunches, and drinks. Please ensure that your insurance cover is for a Walking Holiday abroad and includes re-patriation. Holiday insurance needs to be in place when you book the holiday. You are liable to pay the full amount of the holiday once you book unless a substitute can take your place. To book your place, or ask any questions, contact Debbie at |
