Foreign Trip – France, GR34 Tréguier to St Brieuc (or reverse) – part of the Brittany Coastal Path
Monday 26th August - Saturday 7th September 2024
A second attempt at trying to organise this. Sorry I have left it late again.

Having walked the section from St Brieuc to Mont St Michel in 2012 and from Morlaix to Tréguier in 2017 it is planned to tackle the missing section of the GR34 (Brittany Coastal Path) which runs from Tréguier in the west to St Brieuc in the east, which covers a distance of about 80 miles over 8 walking days with perhaps a rest day after 4 days.

If you do not have time to take two weeks off, worried about the distance or your wallet cannot take it, it is possible to join or leave the trail at several points! Travel is likely to be by overnight ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo. From there trains take you to Lannion and a bus or taxi to the start at Tréguier with a chance to visit the Ile de Bréhat and two nights in Rennes/St Malo.

The obvious split for those not wanting to do the whole trip would be to go from Tréguier to Paimpol (approx. 40 miles) or Paimpol to St Brieuc (approx. 40 miles).

For the days when you do not feel like walking there are some public transport options or taxi. For accommodation we would probably use a mixture of youth hostels, Air B & B or chambres d’hôte (B & B) or hotels so the gear to be taken can be cut right down.

The route is not so severe as parts of the coastal paths in the UK, and gives opportunities for bird watching, botany, swimming as well as a variety of scenery including sandy bays and cliffs. For those of you put off by the more physical foreign trips this would be a good introduction to foreign backpacking!

I would estimate that the cost per night including meals would be about £70 (depending on how the pound fares against the euro and the type of accommodation) and to this needs to be added transport. The ferry is between £130 and £187.50 per person at present, depending on booking conditions accepted and cabins for the outbound journey £25.50 per person (4 sharing) and the train fares in France about £70.

The proposed dates are from Monday 26 August, sailing overnight from Portsmouth and returning Saturday 7 September daytime from St Malo getting back to Portsmouth the same day.

If you are interested, please contact me by 15 April 2024, indicating how much of the trip you would like to do and the dates of your availability. A deposit will not be necessary at this stage, but I do need to know what interest there to see it is worth running the trip as a lot of work will be required to see if accommodation can be secured. A minimum of four persons, going there and back on the same days would be the starting point.
