Weekend Trip – Isle of WightThursday 12th - Sunday 15th March 2026The beautiful island across the water beckons! We’ve wanted to go back to the Isle of Wight for a while, but we’ve struggled to find suitable accommodation. So this is a bit of a compromise – the compromise being that only eight club members get to go, unless people are able / willing to share the two double beds, in which case we could accommodate ten. We’ve found a very comfortable modern 5 bedroomed house just to the west of Yarmouth on the north west coast of the island, home to a number of well-respected pubs, cafés and restaurants (I’m hoping to book a place called Salty’s for the Thursday evening). I’ve roughly mapped out two 12 mile walks: on one day we would cross to the south coast of the island then head west, out to The Needles (the most westerly point) before following the the coast back to Yarmouth. On the other day from Yarmouth we would cross the island in a south easterly direction towards the south coast to take in the Downs above Compton Bay, thence on to Freshwater before returning to our base. Both these walks involve a fair amount of ascent and descent, in the region of 1,300ft (400m); there may be options to shorten the walks by using the local bus service, but I cannot guarantee it. On the Sunday we would do a slightly shorter walk before catching the afternoon ferry home. I will book the ferry from Portsmouth to Fishbourne for two cars (if there are 8 of us), so we would need the offer of a second good sized car to make the pricing as competitive as possible. If there are 10 of us going then we would take three cars. It is anticipated that this could be a popular trip but as stated above places are limited due to the nature of the accommodation, and I will need to exercise my discretion to make the best use of the accommodation we have available. Places will not therefore be allocated on a first come first served basis; instead I would ask you please to email me in the first instance to express your interest. Please indicate whether you would be prepared to share a bed with another club member (using sleeping bags if they are not a person you normally share a bed with!). Please also indicate if you are able to offer to take a car over to the island on the ferry. I will let you know by the end of December at the latest if I am able to offer you a place. Approximate Cost shown below includes accommodation, 3 breakfasts, 2 evening meals, and bread / spread for lunchbox sandwiches: Group travellers: £200 - £250 Due to the cost of the ferries and related logistics at this stage I am proposing to run this trip on the basis of group travel only. That said, I am open to suggestions, especially as I am aware that not all club members live in West Sussex! Deposit : £110 ONLY if you are offered a place |
