Day Walk – Amberley and BurphamSunday 19th January 2025This is a route that featured in December’s edition of The Great Outdoors, as “one of the 10 finest winter walks in the land”. I found a version of the same walk on the OSmaps app, that appeared in Country Walking in 2018: link here The lovely South Downs village of Burpham is situated on a hillside overlooking the Arun valley a couple of miles from Arundel. Its award-winning 17th century pub, The George at Burpham (to give it its full name; it was previously called the George and Dragon Inn), makes an ideal lunch stop for walkers starting from Amberley station (served by regular train services), but for those who would prefer to enjoy the pub at the end of the walk, this route can just as easily be started from the village (which reduces the overall distance a little). The pub was saved from closure, refurbished and reopened in 2013 with much local support. Despite the distance, much of this walk is on good tracks, including a fine ridge-top stretch of the South Downs Way, ideal for striding out on. (If the weather is not so good, it is possible to shorten the route by turning off the South Downs Way a little sooner) ROUTE Start/parking: Amberley station car park, BN18 9LR, grid ref TQ 026 118 Is it for me? Chalk/flint tracks, grassy downland, riverside bank, minor roads. Part of route follows stretch of South Downs Way National Trail. Refreshments: The George at Burpham; Riverside Tea Rooms Public toilets: At start Public transport: London-Bognor Regis trains serve Amberley Maps: OS Explorer 121; Landranger 197 The walk is just over 13 miles long with approx 1250ft of ascent and should take about 6 hours, so please be ready to set off at 9:30am prompt. Please bring a packed lunch. Please let me know if you intend to join us for this walk, either by emailing me, or ideally, completing the Google form by clicking here |
